The Problem. How We Solve It.
Crypto tax software gives you data. We make it filing-ready.
Before you file yourself or hand anything to a CPA, the crypto activity has to be reconciled. That is how North Carolina investors avoid duplicate disposals, unsupported basis, overstated gains, and preventable tax. Clean records improve accuracy, preserve legitimate deductions and losses, and let you reconcile each 1099-DA against the complete transaction history.
The problem
Raw exports are not a tax return.
Exchange exports leave transfers, fees, and missing cost basis unresolved.
DeFi, staking, NFTs, bridges, and wallet-to-wallet moves rarely arrive filing-ready.
1099-DA reports can show proceeds without the complete basis history needed to calculate the right gain or loss.
What you receive
The inputs required to finish your crypto taxes.
A reconciled transaction ledger across every wallet, exchange, chain, and protocol.
Completed Form 8949 inputs and Schedule D totals for capital gains and losses.
Schedule 1 inputs for applicable crypto income, plus payment-income workpapers your tax preparer can classify correctly.

North Carolina Crypto Tax: Reconciled Records for Your CPA
Count On Sheep provides North Carolina investors with a complete record of their digital asset transactions. Our core service, Digital Asset Reconciliation (DAR), rebuilds your crypto history from every exchange, wallet, and blockchain source. This results in a complete, CPA-ready package with Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1 inputs. This enables your tax professional to prepare your federal and North Carolina returns. We focus on transaction evidence so your CPA can focus on tax strategy.
01
Crypto tax record-keeping for North Carolina residents
North Carolina's income tax system relies on the federal government's framework for defining and calculating investment gains. Before determining state tax obligation, a complete federal return is needed, based on a complete history of every crypto transaction. Every trade, swap, and sale requires documentation of cost basis and proceeds to calculate gain or loss.
Our service is built to create this foundational record. We clarify your crypto activity, from high-volume trading in Charlotte to project tokens in the Research Triangle. By reconciling every transaction, we produce the detailed workpapers your CPA needs to file your Form D-400 and federal returns.
02
The Research Triangle's record needs
Technology professionals in the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill areas often have compensation packages including traditional equity like RSUs and digital assets such as project tokens. While distinct, their tax reporting requires a consistent approach. The crypto side, with its on-chain complexity, presents a challenge that traditional accounting methods may not fully address.
Count On Sheep focuses on the crypto portion of your portfolio. As an illustration, a developer might receive project tokens on a vesting schedule, move them to a self-custody wallet, and later sell them. Our DAR process tracks this entire lifecycle, from initial receipt value to final sale, providing a clear record. Your CPA or attorney can then interpret any related employment agreements and integrate our workpapers into your overall tax picture.
03
High-volume trading and DeFi transaction complexity
The practical North Carolina task is to document Research Triangle token and grant records without inferring a state conclusion from wallet activity. DAR supplies the transaction chronology and supporting workpapers. The taxpayer's CPA applies current authority guidance to the full return.
Our reconciliation service addresses this complexity. We analyze your on-chain data to identify transfers, trades, and income events, applying appropriate cost basis methodology. The result is a Form 8949 that reflects your trading activity.
04
Understanding state guidance and your CPA's role
For North Carolina, the record question is Charlotte financial accounts mixed with direct token holdings. Count On Sheep documents transaction dates, quantities, basis support, income inputs, and unresolved records. North Carolina Department of Revenue: Individual Income Tax instructions and the taxpayer's CPA control the state treatment and complete return.
We are not a CPA firm and do not offer tax advice. Our focus is creating a supported and organized crypto transaction history. By handling Digital Asset Reconciliation, we provide your tax advisor with detailed, evidence-based reports.
05
Resolving basis gaps in exchange 1099s
Many North Carolina investors receive a Form 1099-DA from their exchange. However, these forms frequently report incomplete information, particularly missing cost basis for assets transferred from external wallets. This can result in the IRS assuming a basis of zero, potentially leading to an overstatement of your taxable gains.
Our process addresses this. We trace the origin of every asset, matching incoming transfers to their original acquisition cost. This work helps ensure your Form 8949 reports the correct basis for every sale, providing a more accurate calculation of gains and losses than relying solely on a 1099-DA.
06
A statewide resource for digital asset reconciliation
Count On Sheep serves digital asset investors across North Carolina. While city-specific pages address Charlotte and Raleigh, our state-level focus is on providing a resource for anyone needing to clarify their crypto transaction history for tax purposes. Our remote service model allows us to work with clients from the mountains to the coast, all via secure video conferencing.
The challenge of crypto taxes involves transforming blockchain data into a comprehensible financial record. We provide clarity and documentation for North Carolinians, aiding in organized tax reporting.
07
Preparing for your tax professional
Providing your CPA with organized, complete records is beneficial. For digital assets, this means more than just a CSV download from an exchange. It requires reconciliation accounting for self-custody, transfers, and DeFi interactions. Providing this detail upfront allows your CPA to focus on strategy and filing.
Our DAR service connects your crypto data and your CPA. We deliver a package with necessary IRS form inputs and supporting workpapers. This preparation aids in leveraging your CPA's expertise.
08
A 2025 rate example begins after state adjustments
North Carolina's individual income tax rate is 4.25% for 2025. In a rate-only illustration, an additional $20,000 of North Carolina taxable income would produce $850 at 4.25%. That does not mean a $20,000 exchange withdrawal creates $850 of state tax. The withdrawal may include returned basis, and the return may include additions, deductions, credits, withholding, and other income. The useful starting point is the supported gain or income category, not cash leaving an account.
Count On Sheep separates sale proceeds from basis and produces CPA-ready Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1 inputs through Digital Asset Reconciliation. Return preparation remains with the CPA or self-filer, including the decision about how those federal figures enter North Carolina taxable income. The DAR engagement does not calculate the complete liability or recommend a transaction. The $850 figure isolates one rate calculation so the effect of a basis correction is easier to understand.
09
Schedule PN turns a move year into a percentage
A North Carolina part-year resident or nonresident may need Schedule PN. The schedule compares income from all sources with the portion attributable to North Carolina and uses the result to determine a taxable percentage carried to Form D-400. That calculation is broader than a list of crypto disposals. A person who moved during the year needs an accurate transaction calendar, but also needs independent evidence of residency dates and where relevant activities occurred.
For the digital-asset side, DAR can freeze an inventory at the move date and list receipts and disposals on either side of it. It can also preserve exchange statements, wallet hashes, values, and lot support for the CPA. Count On Sheep does not choose the North Carolina column on Schedule PN or prepare the state return. The client supplies residence and sourcing facts, and the CPA applies them to the reconciled federal results and the rest of the household income.
10
Keep Schedule S adjustments outside the wallet ledger
The 2025 North Carolina return begins with federal adjusted gross income, then uses Schedule S for state additions and deductions before arriving at North Carolina taxable income. That bridge should remain visible. Editing wallet-level gain or income to imitate a state adjustment makes the federal support trail harder to audit and can obscure which rule changed the return. The ledger should state what happened economically; the state schedule should show the North Carolina modification.
A clean handoff has three layers: source transactions, federal form inputs, and a separate state-adjustment workpaper controlled by the return owner. Count On Sheep handles the first two and records unresolved items without forcing an answer. A North Carolina CPA or the client's self-filing workflow handles Schedule S, the D-400, and any state interpretation. This structure lets a reviewer trace a state number back to federal forms and then to the exchange or wallet evidence that supports it.

Common Issues
What we untangle for North Carolina crypto investors
Pattern 01
Missing or incomplete cost basis
Exchanges lose data, wallets get abandoned, chain history fragments. Reconstructing accurate cost basis across years of trading is the largest source of error on a crypto return.
Pattern 02
DeFi and cross-chain complexity
Liquidity pool entries, yield farming, cross-chain bridges, wrapped tokens, restaking. Each creates taxable moments most consumer software misses or misclassifies.
Pattern 03
Unreported prior-year activity
Many crypto investors discover years of unreported trades after receiving an IRS letter. Back-year reconstruction and voluntary disclosure planning is part of what we deliver.
North Carolina pattern 01
Research Triangle tech-employee equity-plus-crypto stacks needing combined basis crypto tax work
North Carolina pattern 02
Charlotte banking professionals with high-volume trading on top of W-2 comp

FAQ
Common questions, North Carolina edition
What does a crypto tax service do for a North Carolina investor?
For North Carolina, Count On Sheep performs Digital Asset Reconciliation. We rebuild exchange, wallet, broker, and DeFi activity into CPA-ready Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1 inputs. The North Carolina CPA or the taxpayer's self-filing workflow handles the return itself.
Does Count On Sheep file the North Carolina tax return?
No. Count On Sheep is not a CPA firm and does not prepare or file the North Carolina return. We deliver the reconciled crypto schedules and supporting workpapers. The North Carolina return preparer combines those records with wages, businesses, deductions, elections, residence facts, and every other part of the filing.
Why does Research Triangle token and grant records matter in North Carolina?
Research Triangle token and grant records can change which source records a North Carolina CPA needs. Count On Sheep traces the relevant North Carolina transactions, preserves dates and ownership, and documents unsupported items rather than assigning a state tax conclusion without evidence.
Which records support Charlotte financial accounts mixed with direct token holdings for North Carolina?
A North Carolina review of Charlotte financial accounts mixed with direct token holdings can require exchange exports, public wallet addresses, transaction identifiers, prior Form 8949 files, broker statements, and documents that explain ownership or purpose. Count On Sheep organizes the North Carolina crypto evidence and flags anything the CPA must resolve.
How should a Form 1099-DA with missing basis be handled in North Carolina?
The North Carolina broker proceeds still need to be reconciled to the full ownership history. Count On Sheep traces assets through prior exchanges and self-custody, supports available basis and acquisition dates, and prepares a North Carolina workpaper that connects the broker form to Form 8949 inputs.
What does the North Carolina CPA-ready package contain?
The North Carolina package contains transaction-level disposition detail, Schedule D summaries, digital-asset income inputs, transfer matching, closing lots, broker-form reconciliation, and documented exceptions. Each material North Carolina number is tied to a source record or a clearly stated assumption.
How do North Carolina clients meet with Count On Sheep?
North Carolina meetings are held by video conference, which keeps scheduling fast for both sides. Documents move through a secure portal and are reviewed together on screen, so the full engagement happens without a trip to an office.
Can my CPA use your reports?
Yes. That is exactly the point. Our deliverable drops directly into the workflow your CPA already uses. Schedule D totals, 8949 detail, Schedule 1 inputs for staking and airdrops, and reconciliation workpapers behind every number.
Does this work with TurboTax?
Yes. If you self-file, the Count On Sheep deliverable plugs into TurboTax. You enter the 8949 totals (or import where supported), and our workpapers back up every line if you ever need to defend it.
What do I need to start?
Exchange account access or CSV exports, wallet addresses for every chain you have transacted on, any prior-year tax returns that touched crypto, and a brief on your DeFi activity. We scope North Carolina engagements from there.
How is the engagement priced?
Book a meeting to walk us through your account. We will review the scope and provide a written quote before any work begins.
