Key Facts

Key Facts About Crypto Tax Service in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania taxes income at a flat 3.07%, one of the lowest rates among states with an income tax. But Philadelphia and other PA cities add local wage taxes, and PA's unique loss-treatment rules make per-event crypto tax work high-leverage.

Questions first?(858) 434-7547
  1. Pennsylvania taxes income at a flat 3.07%, one of the lowest among income-tax states.
  2. Pennsylvania uses rolling IRC conformity at the federal-conformity level.
  3. PA does not allow capital losses to offset ordinary income, state-level netting is more restricted.
  4. Philadelphia and other cities impose local wage taxes that piggyback on residency.
  5. As your crypto tax service specialist, Count On Sheep delivers CPA-ready 8949 and Schedule D inputs, your CPA files.
The Problem. How We Solve It.

Crypto tax software gives you data. We make it filing-ready.

Before you file yourself or hand anything to a CPA, the crypto activity has to be reconciled. That is how Pennsylvania investors avoid duplicate disposals, unsupported basis, overstated gains, and preventable tax. Clean records improve accuracy, preserve legitimate deductions and losses, and let you reconcile each 1099-DA against the complete transaction history.

The problem

Raw exports are not a tax return.

  • Exchange exports leave transfers, fees, and missing cost basis unresolved.
  • DeFi, staking, NFTs, bridges, and wallet-to-wallet moves rarely arrive filing-ready.
  • 1099-DA reports can show proceeds without the complete basis history needed to calculate the right gain or loss.
What you receive

The inputs required to finish your crypto taxes.

  • A reconciled transaction ledger across every wallet, exchange, chain, and protocol.
  • Completed Form 8949 inputs and Schedule D totals for capital gains and losses.
  • Schedule 1 inputs for applicable crypto income, plus payment-income workpapers your tax preparer can classify correctly.

Pennsylvania Crypto Tax

Pennsylvania Crypto Tax Service for Record Preparation

Count On Sheep provides Pennsylvania crypto holders with a detailed record of their transaction history for tax reporting. Our specialized process, Digital Asset Reconciliation (DAR), transforms scattered data from every wallet and exchange into a single, auditable financial ledger. We deliver a CPA-ready package, including inputs for Form 8949 and Schedule D, giving your tax professional the detailed evidence they need. This supports compliance with federal requirements. We build the record; your CPA provides the advice.

Pennsylvania's loss treatment rules for crypto assets

Pennsylvania's personal income tax system has specific rules for capital losses that differ from federal law. For crypto investors, this means the netting of gains and losses may require careful, transaction-by-transaction detail. Relying on a simple net gain or loss figure from a crypto exchange alone may not be sufficient for state tax purposes.

Our DAR service provides a granular report detailing the gain or loss on every single transaction. For example, if a taxpayer has gains on one exchange and losses on a decentralized platform, our workpapers support each disposition separately. This gives your CPA the necessary information to review and apply Pennsylvania's specific loss rules when preparing your PA-40 Schedule D.

Establishing a federal foundation for Pennsylvania filing

While Pennsylvania has its own set of rules, the process of calculating crypto gains and losses still begins with the federal framework. Establishing the correct cost basis, holding period, and proceeds for every transaction is a universal first step. An accurate federal Form 8949 provides the data that supports a correct Pennsylvania tax return.

Count On Sheep is dedicated to creating this federal foundation. We reconcile your entire crypto history, accounting for transfers between wallets, self-custody activity, and common basis gaps found on exchange-issued 1099-DA forms. This preparation provides your CPA with a reliable and complete dataset to work from for both federal and state reporting.

Supporting Philadelphia crypto investors

For residents of Philadelphia, the city's wage tax adds a dimension to financial planning. While this tax primarily applies to earned compensation, the distinction can be important with certain crypto activity, such as receiving tokens for services. Documenting a clear difference between investment gains and compensation is important for city and state tax considerations.

Our service provides transactional clarity. We trace the origin of every asset, which helps your CPA classify your crypto proceeds. If you have records showing crypto was received as compensation, we incorporate that into the history. This provides your CPA with a full picture for addressing Philadelphia and state tax requirements. We focus on transaction data; your CPA handles the legal classification.

A statewide resource for crypto tax records

The need for accurate crypto tax reporting extends across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. From the tech communities in Pittsburgh to investors in the Lehigh Valley, individuals face the same core challenge: translating complex blockchain data into a clear, understandable tax report. Our service is available to all Pennsylvanians via a secure and remote process.

Every crypto investor benefits from specialized help for their transaction history. By focusing exclusively on Digital Asset Reconciliation, we provide a level of detail and accuracy that is often difficult to achieve with general accounting services. We deliver the clarity you and your CPA need for managing tax season requirements.

The risks of incomplete exchange 1099s

Many crypto exchanges issue a Form 1099-DA that can omit cost basis information, especially for assets that were transferred onto the platform from external sources. If this form is used as-is, it may lead to reporting an incorrect cost basis, which can affect your taxable gains.

Our DAR process is built to address these potential issues. We independently verify your cost basis by analyzing your full transaction history from all sources. We match incoming transfers to their original purchase records, ensuring the Form 8949 we produce reflects your actual trading activity and asset history.

Your CPA's role and the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue provides the tax code and regulations for the state. Your CPA is your licensed advisor who helps you review these rules. Count On Sheep acts as a critical support specialist for your tax team. We are not a CPA firm and do not provide tax advice. Our job is to deliver a complete record of your crypto transactions.

By handling this specialized and time-consuming task, we allow your CPA to focus on high-value strategic planning and advice. Your CPA can rely on the data being complete and accurate, enabling them to serve you effectively when addressing Pennsylvania's tax considerations.

Handling various forms of crypto activity

Our expertise is not limited to simple buying and selling of crypto assets. We handle the full spectrum of digital asset activity, including staking rewards, DeFi lending, liquidity pools, and NFT trading. Each of these creates distinct events that must be identified, valued, and reported correctly.

For Pennsylvanians exploring these more advanced areas of crypto, our service provides necessary support. We translate complex interactions with smart contracts and decentralized protocols into clear, structured data required for tax reporting, ensuring every transaction is documented for your CPA's review.

Pennsylvania added a digital-asset question to Schedule D

The 2025 Pennsylvania Schedule D added a digital-asset question asking whether the taxpayer received, sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of a digital asset. Pennsylvania also treats a sale of bitcoin as a disposition of intangible property reported on PA-40 Schedule D. The question is broader than a year-end balance and cannot be answered from a single broker form. Wallet trades, token swaps, purchases, gifts, and transfers may need factual classification before the return owner responds.

DAR builds the event inventory and distinguishes owned-wallet transfers from disposals, receipts, and items that need professional judgment. Count On Sheep then supplies CPA-ready Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1 inputs plus an exception list. Answering Pennsylvania's question, preparing PA-40 Schedule D, and giving tax advice are outside that work. The return-level response is reviewed and submitted by the client's CPA or through the client's self-filing workflow.

A losing year does not create a Pennsylvania carryforward

Pennsylvania does not allow a net loss from the sale or disposition of property to carry forward or backward. Consider a simplified two-year record: a taxpayer has a $12,000 net loss in the property class for 2025 and a $20,000 net gain in 2026. The 2025 loss cannot offset the 2026 gain. At Pennsylvania's 3.07% rate, $20,000 of fully taxable 2026 gain would equal $614 before credits and other return-level considerations.

That rule makes year-end completeness especially important. A missing December disposal can change whether the property class finishes the year with net gain or loss, yet the ledger should never be altered to force a preferred result. Count On Sheep reconciles all located transactions and identifies missing periods or unsupported lots. The CPA or self-filer applies Pennsylvania's class rules and flat rate. Count On Sheep does not prepare the return, carry losses between years, or advise on transaction timing.

Holding period does not change Pennsylvania's 3.07% rate

Pennsylvania taxes net gains from property at 3.07% and does not distinguish between short-term and long-term gains for its personal income tax. Federal reporting still requires acquisition and disposal dates, and those dates can change federal treatment. The same disposal therefore needs one accurate lot history even though the federal and Pennsylvania calculations use that history differently. A label imported from an exchange is not a substitute for tracing transferred assets back to acquisition.

Count On Sheep preserves the dates, proceeds, fees, basis, and wallet path in Form 8949 and Schedule D inputs. A state bridge can then map the reconciled disposition to PA-40 Schedule D without erasing the federal holding-period detail. The client's CPA or self-filing workflow controls that bridge and the state return. DAR provides transaction evidence; it does not determine Pennsylvania liability, prepare a filing, or suggest whether a taxpayer should hold or dispose of an asset.

Your Pennsylvania Crypto Tax Checklist

  • Gather complete transaction histories from every crypto exchange used.
  • List all public wallet addresses to track self-custody assets.
  • Document all sources of crypto income, such as staking or mining rewards.
  • Provide any records related to Philadelphia residency or compensation.
  • Separate transaction records by year to assist with PA's loss rules.
  • Consult a CPA for advice on Pennsylvania's specific tax regulations.
Common Issues

What we untangle for Pennsylvania crypto investors

Pattern 01

Missing or incomplete cost basis

Exchanges lose data, wallets get abandoned, chain history fragments. Reconstructing accurate cost basis across years of trading is the largest source of error on a crypto return.

Pattern 02

DeFi and cross-chain complexity

Liquidity pool entries, yield farming, cross-chain bridges, wrapped tokens, restaking. Each creates taxable moments most consumer software misses or misclassifies.

Pattern 03

Unreported prior-year activity

Many crypto investors discover years of unreported trades after receiving an IRS letter. Back-year reconstruction and voluntary disclosure planning is part of what we deliver.

Pennsylvania pattern 01

PA does not allow capital losses to offset ordinary income, affecting state-level netting strategy

Pennsylvania pattern 02

Philadelphia city wage tax interactions and local sourcing for residents

FAQ

Common questions, Pennsylvania edition

What does a crypto tax service do for a Pennsylvania investor?

For Pennsylvania, Count On Sheep performs Digital Asset Reconciliation. We rebuild exchange, wallet, broker, and DeFi activity into CPA-ready Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1 inputs. The Pennsylvania CPA or the taxpayer's self-filing workflow handles the return itself.

Does Count On Sheep file the Pennsylvania tax return?

No. Count On Sheep is not a CPA firm and does not prepare or file the Pennsylvania return. We deliver the reconciled crypto schedules and supporting workpapers. The Pennsylvania return preparer combines those records with wages, businesses, deductions, elections, residence facts, and every other part of the filing.

Why does per-transaction gain and loss evidence matter in Pennsylvania?

Per-transaction gain and loss evidence can change which source records a Pennsylvania CPA needs. Count On Sheep traces the relevant Pennsylvania transactions, preserves dates and ownership, and documents unsupported items rather than assigning a state tax conclusion without evidence.

Which records support Philadelphia residence or compensation records for Pennsylvania?

A Pennsylvania review of Philadelphia residence or compensation records can require exchange exports, public wallet addresses, transaction identifiers, prior Form 8949 files, broker statements, and documents that explain ownership or purpose. Count On Sheep organizes the Pennsylvania crypto evidence and flags anything the CPA must resolve.

How should a Form 1099-DA with missing basis be handled in Pennsylvania?

The Pennsylvania broker proceeds still need to be reconciled to the full ownership history. Count On Sheep traces assets through prior exchanges and self-custody, supports available basis and acquisition dates, and prepares a Pennsylvania workpaper that connects the broker form to Form 8949 inputs.

What does the Pennsylvania CPA-ready package contain?

The Pennsylvania package contains transaction-level disposition detail, Schedule D summaries, digital-asset income inputs, transfer matching, closing lots, broker-form reconciliation, and documented exceptions. Each material Pennsylvania number is tied to a source record or a clearly stated assumption.

How do Pennsylvania clients meet with Count On Sheep?

Pennsylvania meetings are held by video conference, which keeps scheduling fast for both sides. Documents move through a secure portal and are reviewed together on screen, so the full engagement happens without a trip to an office.

Can my CPA use your reports?

Yes. That is exactly the point. Our deliverable drops directly into the workflow your CPA already uses. Schedule D totals, 8949 detail, Schedule 1 inputs for staking and airdrops, and reconciliation workpapers behind every number.

Does this work with TurboTax?

Yes. If you self-file, the Count On Sheep deliverable plugs into TurboTax. You enter the 8949 totals (or import where supported), and our workpapers back up every line if you ever need to defend it.

What do I need to start?

Exchange account access or CSV exports, wallet addresses for every chain you have transacted on, any prior-year tax returns that touched crypto, and a brief on your DeFi activity. We scope Pennsylvania engagements from there.

How is the engagement priced?

Book a meeting to walk us through your account. We will review the scope and provide a written quote before any work begins.
