The Problem. How We Solve It.
Crypto tax software gives you data. We make it filing-ready.
Before you file yourself or hand anything to a CPA, the crypto activity has to be reconciled. That is how Montana investors avoid duplicate disposals, unsupported basis, overstated gains, and preventable tax. Clean records improve accuracy, preserve legitimate deductions and losses, and let you reconcile each 1099-DA against the complete transaction history.
The problem
Raw exports are not a tax return.
Exchange exports leave transfers, fees, and missing cost basis unresolved.
DeFi, staking, NFTs, bridges, and wallet-to-wallet moves rarely arrive filing-ready.
1099-DA reports can show proceeds without the complete basis history needed to calculate the right gain or loss.
What you receive
The inputs required to finish your crypto taxes.
A reconciled transaction ledger across every wallet, exchange, chain, and protocol.
Completed Form 8949 inputs and Schedule D totals for capital gains and losses.
Schedule 1 inputs for applicable crypto income, plus payment-income workpapers your tax preparer can classify correctly.

Montana Crypto Tax Records
Crypto Tax Reconciliation Service for Montana Investors
For Montana's growing digital asset investor community, from Bozeman and Missoula to retirees across the state, accurate tax reporting is key. Montana's income tax applies to crypto gains, making a precise and documented transaction history essential. Count On Sheep offers a reconciliation service to create this history. We perform detailed Digital Asset Reconciliation (DAR) to build a complete, evidence-based record of your crypto activity, delivering CPA-ready reports for your Montana tax filing.
01
The foundation: Federal accuracy for your Montana return
For Montana, the record question is mining or validator receipts. Count On Sheep documents transaction dates, quantities, basis support, income inputs, and unresolved records. Montana Department of Revenue: Individual Income Tax instructions and the taxpayer's CPA control the state treatment and complete return.
The Montana workpaper treats remote-worker moves with open crypto lots as an evidence issue. Exchange files, wallet history, broker statements, and supplied documents establish the record. A CPA applies current Montana Department of Revenue: Individual Income Tax instructions outside the DAR engagement.
02
Handling mining and validator rewards
Montana's landscape is attractive for individuals running mining operations or validator nodes. Income from these activities must be reported. Each reward is ordinary income, valued at the fair market price of the coin on the day received. This value also establishes the cost basis for those coins when later sold. Tracking this daily stream of income and basis creation is a significant bookkeeping challenge.
We specialize in reconstructing this data. We analyze your reward history from mining pools or validator logs to build a detailed income report. This creates necessary inputs for Schedule 1 or Schedule C of your federal return, and establishes lot-by-lot cost basis for your assets. This complete approach ensures both your income and subsequent capital gains are reported accurately.
03
Support for remote workers and new residents
Montana's appeal has drawn many remote workers who bring their careers and investments. If you've moved to Montana with an existing crypto portfolio, your tax situation has complexities. The cost basis of your assets was established before you became a Montana resident, and it's useful this historical data is preserved and accurately reported when you sell.
Our reconciliation process is suited for this. We reconstruct your entire transaction history, regardless of where you lived when trades were made. We preserve the original basis of your lots and delineate activity before and after your move. While your CPA applies Montana's residency rules, we provide them with clean, chronologically-ordered data for correct application.
04
An illustrative worked example
Consider a hypothetical remote software engineer who moves to Bozeman in May. She has a crypto portfolio acquired over years in another state. After her move, she also begins receiving validator rewards in a new proof-of-stake currency. Later, she sells some older assets. Her tax situation involves pre-move capital assets and post-move ordinary income and capital gains.
Our DAR service creates a unified ledger of this activity. We document the original basis of assets she brought with her. We then record each validator reward as income at fair market value on the date received. Finally, we calculate the capital gain on assets sold, using the correct, preserved basis. This provides her CPA with a complete report separating each component, allowing accurate application of federal and Montana tax laws based on her residency timeline.
05
Give your Montana tax professional
Count On Sheep is not a CPA firm and does not provide tax advice or file returns. We are data reconciliation specialists serving as a resource for you and your CPA. Many tax professionals in Montana may not specialize in the forensic data analysis for complex crypto portfolios. We fill that gap.
Our deliverable is a professional, CPA-ready package containing reconciled transaction history and necessary tax form inputs. This allows your CPA to work with verified, accurate crypto data. They can then focus on strategic advice and ensuring your return complies with all Montana Department of Revenue guidance.
06
Reconstructing long-held positions for retirees
For retirees who invested in crypto early, selling long-held positions presents record-keeping challenges. Finding original purchase information from a decade-old exchange is common. Without this data, you risk paying capital gains tax on the entire sale proceeds, rather than just the profit.
Our team has experience with historical data reconstruction. We often trace asset provenance even when original sources are inaccessible, using on-chain data and forensic techniques. By recovering this cost-basis information, we ensure accurate tax reporting and prevent overpayment on legacy investments.
07
Building a durable, long-term record
A professional reconciliation of your crypto assets is more than a tool for this year's tax filing. It creates a durable, auditable record of a significant asset class. This clean, organized ledger is invaluable for financial planning, estate planning, and managing your portfolio going forward.
Investing in a Digital Asset Reconciliation transforms complex data into a clear financial record. This proactive step provides peace of mind and establishes a new standard for managing digital assets, ensuring preparedness for tax time and beyond.
08
Montana gives long-term gains their own rate table
Montana's 2025 tables separate ordinary income from net long-term capital gains. For single filers, ordinary income is taxed at 4.7% and 5.9% bands, while net long-term capital gains fall into 3% and 4.1% bands based on ordinary income and the published threshold. This makes the acquisition date more than a federal detail. A missing date can prevent the CPA from placing a supported crypto result into the correct Montana calculation.
Count On Sheep traces each disposed unit to its acquisition, including lots that moved through self-custody before sale. The deliverable separates federally short-term and long-term results in Form 8949 and Schedule D inputs, then lists unsupported dates as exceptions. The Montana CPA applies the state table, filing status, thresholds, and any adjustments. DAR does not select a holding period for an undocumented lot or calculate the complete state liability. It supplies the dated evidence needed for that work.
09
A Montana rate-table example shows why dates matter
Assume a single Montana filer already has more than $21,100 of ordinary income and realizes $20,000 of supported net long-term crypto gain in 2025. Under the state's published table, that capital-gain slice falls in the 4.1% band, producing $820 before the CPA applies the rest of the return. If the same units cannot be shown to be long-term, that illustration no longer describes the facts. The acquisition record controls the starting classification.
The DAR workpaper supports the example with exchange confirmations, wallet transfers, timestamps, and the final proceeds. It also keeps reward income or validator receipts out of the disposal total, because those entries follow a different federal reporting path when applicable. Count On Sheep does not advise the client to sell, choose filing status, or treat the $820 as a quote. The Montana CPA owns the state computation. The example simply shows the practical value of a verified lot date.
10
No general sales tax does not mean no income tax
Montana does not have a general-use sales tax, a fact that can create the wrong expectation about crypto. The state still imposes individual income tax and publishes separate 2025 rates for ordinary income and net long-term capital gains. Buying an asset without a general sales-tax charge does not settle the income-tax treatment of a later sale, swap, reward, or payment. Those events need their own dates, values, and transaction records.
A Montana intake should therefore distinguish purchases from later dispositions and digital-asset income. Count On Sheep maps the custody trail, values supported receipt events, and sends the CPA or self-filer Schedule 1 figures alongside Form 8949 detail and Schedule D totals. It does not prepare a sales-tax return, an income-tax return, or advise on Montana liability. The narrow goal is to prevent a familiar state slogan from replacing the transaction evidence required for federal and Montana review.

Common Issues
What we untangle for Montana crypto investors
Pattern 01
Missing or incomplete cost basis
Exchanges lose data, wallets get abandoned, chain history fragments. Reconstructing accurate cost basis across years of trading is the largest source of error on a crypto return.
Pattern 02
DeFi and cross-chain complexity
Liquidity pool entries, yield farming, cross-chain bridges, wrapped tokens, restaking. Each creates taxable moments most consumer software misses or misclassifies.
Pattern 03
Unreported prior-year activity
Many crypto investors discover years of unreported trades after receiving an IRS letter. Back-year reconstruction and voluntary disclosure planning is part of what we deliver.
Montana pattern 01
Tech-adjacent professionals in Bozeman and Missoula with DeFi and equity-comp combinations
Montana pattern 02
Long-hold retiree positions with multi-year cost-basis reconstruction needs

FAQ
Common questions, Montana edition
What does a crypto tax service do for a Montana investor?
For Montana, Count On Sheep performs Digital Asset Reconciliation. We rebuild exchange, wallet, broker, and DeFi activity into CPA-ready Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1 inputs. The Montana CPA or the taxpayer's self-filing workflow handles the return itself.
Does Count On Sheep file the Montana tax return?
No. Count On Sheep is not a CPA firm and does not prepare or file the Montana return. We deliver the reconciled crypto schedules and supporting workpapers. The Montana return preparer combines those records with wages, businesses, deductions, elections, residence facts, and every other part of the filing.
Why does mining or validator receipts matter in Montana?
Mining or validator receipts can change which source records a Montana CPA needs. Count On Sheep traces the relevant Montana transactions, preserves dates and ownership, and documents unsupported items rather than assigning a state tax conclusion without evidence.
Which records support remote-worker moves with open crypto lots for Montana?
A Montana review of remote-worker moves with open crypto lots can require exchange exports, public wallet addresses, transaction identifiers, prior Form 8949 files, broker statements, and documents that explain ownership or purpose. Count On Sheep organizes the Montana crypto evidence and flags anything the CPA must resolve.
How should a Form 1099-DA with missing basis be handled in Montana?
The Montana broker proceeds still need to be reconciled to the full ownership history. Count On Sheep traces assets through prior exchanges and self-custody, supports available basis and acquisition dates, and prepares a Montana workpaper that connects the broker form to Form 8949 inputs.
What does the Montana CPA-ready package contain?
The Montana package contains transaction-level disposition detail, Schedule D summaries, digital-asset income inputs, transfer matching, closing lots, broker-form reconciliation, and documented exceptions. Each material Montana number is tied to a source record or a clearly stated assumption.
How do Montana clients meet with Count On Sheep?
Montana meetings are held by video conference, which keeps scheduling fast for both sides. Documents move through a secure portal and are reviewed together on screen, so the full engagement happens without a trip to an office.
Can my CPA use your reports?
Yes. That is exactly the point. Our deliverable drops directly into the workflow your CPA already uses. Schedule D totals, 8949 detail, Schedule 1 inputs for staking and airdrops, and reconciliation workpapers behind every number.
Does this work with TurboTax?
Yes. If you self-file, the Count On Sheep deliverable plugs into TurboTax. You enter the 8949 totals (or import where supported), and our workpapers back up every line if you ever need to defend it.
What do I need to start?
Exchange account access or CSV exports, wallet addresses for every chain you have transacted on, any prior-year tax returns that touched crypto, and a brief on your DeFi activity. We scope Montana engagements from there.
How is the engagement priced?
Book a meeting to walk us through your account. We will review the scope and provide a written quote before any work begins.
