Get your real numbers reconciled

Estimate only, for the 2025/26 tax year and based on England, Wales and Northern Ireland rate bands. It assumes a single Section 104 cost figure and does not model same-day or 30-day matching, income from staking or mining, or Scottish rate bands. Count On Sheep rebuilds your full history so the real figures are defensible. We do not file your return.

How this calculator works

The calculator estimates Capital Gains Tax on a straightforward crypto sale for the 2025/26 tax year. It takes your total disposal proceeds, subtracts your cost and the £3,000 annual exempt amount, then splits the remaining gain across the 18% and 24% rate bands based on your other income.

It is built for a quick answer, so it deliberately keeps things simple. Real UK crypto tax involves Section 104 pooling, the same-day and 30-day matching rules, income from staking and mining, DeFi positions, and for Scottish taxpayers a different set of income bands. Those are exactly the things that move the final number, and the things we reconcile for you.

The £3,000 and £50,000 are different numbers
The £3,000 is your tax-free annual exempt amount. The £50,000 is a separate reporting threshold on total proceeds. You can owe nothing yet still have to report if your proceeds cross £50,000. More on this in how much crypto is tax free in the UK.

Here is the same calculation worked through by hand, so you can see what the tool is doing.

Worked example: A single Bitcoin sale, basic rate taxpayer
Salary (other income)£40,000
Crypto disposal proceeds£30,000
Allowable pooled cost£18,000
Gain before allowance£12,000
Less annual exempt amount£3,000
Taxable gain at 18%£9,000
Estimated Capital Gains Tax£1,620

From an estimate to a defensible figure

An estimate is a starting point. To file with confidence, every wallet, exchange and chain has to be pulled into one ledger, every swap valued in pounds, and the matching rules applied in the right order. Count On Sheep does that reconstruction and produces HMRC-ready figures, including your SA108 cryptoassets numbers, ready for your accountant or your Self Assessment. We do not file the return. We make the numbers stand up.

Want to understand the rules behind the maths? Read the UK Crypto Tax Guide for 2025/26, which covers CGT, income, DeFi and the SA108 form box by box.

UK crypto tax FAQs

How is crypto tax calculated in the UK?

Your capital gain is your disposal proceeds in pounds minus the allowable cost of those coins and any direct fees. You deduct the £3,000 annual exempt amount, then the remaining gain is taxed at 18% within your basic rate band and 24% above it. The calculator above applies this for the 2025/26 tax year.

How much crypto is tax free in the UK?

For 2025/26 the first £3,000 of net capital gains across all your assets is free of Capital Gains Tax through the annual exempt amount. Separately, if your total disposal proceeds exceed £50,000 you may need to report to HMRC even when the gain is small.

What crypto tax rate will I pay in the UK?

For 2025/26, crypto capital gains are taxed at 18% where the gain sits within your basic rate band and 24% above it. Your other income for the year decides how much of the gain falls into each band. Crypto received as income is taxed at your Income Tax rate instead.

Is this UK crypto tax calculator accurate?

It gives a solid estimate for a straightforward sale, using 2025/26 rates and the £3,000 allowance. It does not model same-day and 30-day matching, Section 104 pooling across many trades, staking or mining income, or Scottish bands. For a defensible figure, Count On Sheep reconciles your full history and hands HMRC-ready numbers to your accountant.
